Dominated by the famous Penon d’Ifach which offers a fantastic view to those courageous enough to climb its 1090 feet, Calpe is a traditional fishing town and the customary fish auctions still take place daily.
Even back in the time when Romans occupied the town fishing was a major industry here as can be seen from the Roman built “Banos de la Reina” which are actually curious fish hatching and drying rooms built into the sea.
The Phoenicians, Moors and Greeks also settled in this area and contributed to the development of agriculture and construction of fortifications here, some of which can still be visited today such as the “Torreo de la Paca”.
Nature lovers will appreciate the beautiful countryside surrounding the town and the bird sanctuary situated at the old Roman salt mines at the foot of the Penon d’Ifach. Cultivated fields contrast with cliffs, inlets and white sand beaches to provide a different view in every direction.
Climbing, potholing, sailing, scuba diving, windsurfing and waterskiing are all available for the more energetic whilst others may prefer visiting the numerous historical sites such as the Hermitage of San Salvador or the Archeological and Festival Museums. Sailors will be at home in the Nautical Club and golfers will no doubt wish to try out the Ifach Golf Club which has a short but challenging 9 hole course.
