Due to it becoming the main salt producing area in the Costa Blanca, Torrevieja has grown considerably since the early 1800’s. The salt flats and lagoons have given the town a unique character and have a rather unusual slightly pink colour, highlighted by the many flamingos that live here.
Torrevieja originally grew up around an old watchtower, hence its name, but in the last twenty years the healthy microclimate here and lovely beaches have drawn both tourists and non Spanish residents resulting in a modernised resort town with many attractions whilst still preserving its heritage as a fishing village and major salt producing centre.
The harbour and seafront have been improved and modernised resulting in excellent facilities for sailing and many other water sports. There are mooring facilities for over 800 private yachts and the harbour is also home to 300 fishing boats.
Many property developments have taken place in Torrevieja resulting in a variety of modern, purpose built apartment blocks for those wanting their holiday home in the sun and in summer the town comes alive with both residents and tourists out to enjoy themselves at the many local summer fiestas.
The four local white sand beaches of “El Cura”, “Los Locos”, “Los Naufragos” and “Torrelamata Sur” although alike in their excellent standards each has slightly different characteristics and are all popular.
The Water Park of Aquapolis, the Habaneras shopping mall, the market and the various museums, churches and parks all contribute to the popularity of this town where there is something for everyone.
