Originally a small village, Villamartin has become a reasonable sized modern town due to intense development over the past ten years. Home to many expatriates it is a popular tourist resort with a mature and beautiful golf course; it hosted the 1994 Mediterranean Open Championship.
Although there are several beaches close by, the nearest beach is La Zenia which won a Blue Flag award for its water quality, services and high standards in 2003. Along the beachfront can be found an excellent variety of bars, restaurants, amusements and hotels.
Villamartin is particularly well known for its Mediterranean style Plaza, a popular meeting place with many mature palm trees occupied by a group of noisy parrots, popular with residents and tourists alike. This is the main place for bars, shops and restaurants of which there is an excellent selection.
The Gardens make an ideal venue to relax in a beautifully landscaped area with several water features, look out for the slightly strange nude Lady Golfer statue.
Although maybe some would find it a little lacking historically and culturally this is a lovely place to visit and unwind, between the nearby beaches, plaza, gardens and excellent amenities there is plenty to do and see and Villamartin is a firm favourite with golfers.
